WHY I TEACH

Becoming a teacher was never really something I had to think twice about. I grew up in classrooms with my mom so immediately I felt at home there, then later in my high school career, I was sold. I had three really good teachers that showed me what makes someone a good teacher. They did things that I want to bring into my classrooms, no matter the subject I am teaching.

When it comes to my family and consumer sciences classes, I want to focus on more than just the food, the fashion and the family. I want to dive into the customs of other cultures because once we have the background knowledge then we learn to appreciate everything that comes with that. I am a big fan of project based learning, and in this field of education I get to do that pretty much everyday. I want to provide my students with every possible opportunity to express themselves in their flavors, in their fabric choices or any other way they seem fit. FCS is always an adventure because it draws upon other core subjects including humanities, art, science and mathematics, just to name a few. I get to find parallels between all of them and apply that to real world examples. These classes can greatly impact a student's future and well-being, and I do not take that lightly. My main goal is that students really are able to apply the knowledge and skill set I provide them with to their real lives.

On the English side of the classroom, my biggest goal has been and will always be to inspire my students and celebrate their works. There are only a few things greater than seeing progress in your students work or seeing their face beam when they are proud of something they wrote. I want to go beyond the normal class discussions to make it a more stimulating classroom experience. This means that throughout the class we will use multiple means of presenting, writing and reading. We may dive further into readings and really interpret them rather than simply skim through the paragraphs, we may work on public speaking and study great speakers and their impact, or we may even write a book, truly the options are endless.

Above all, supporting and encouraging my students is going to be key. Constant showering of unconditional love, care and concern for my students is essential as I believe it is a good way to build rapport and relationship. With this bonds fostered, they will feel at ease to look for me when they are in need or trouble, whether that trouble be inside or outside of the classroom.

Eat This Not That

The main goal of this lesson is to get students thinking about the choices they make each day and how their diet is impacted by them. Students will have to critique and evaluate menu items at their favorite restaurants, then educate their peers.
