POETRY OUT LOUD
Learning how to express ourselves through poetry and creative writing
Word Karaoke
Working in pairs and using lines from students' favorite songs, classes had to reword these lines and turn them into a poem or song. This exercise got to bring in students interests and let them have free range when thinking about what they wanted to write about.
Get Your Haiku On
Haiku is one of the most traditional forms of poetry which follow a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. However, writing these over and over can be cumbersome, so why not make some fun out of it! With this unit section, we will go through various activities ranging from a Tanka activity to a Haiku battle.
Discover Your Own Voice
Poetry can become a great outlet for a lot of people, especially when it comes to heavy topics. With so many world issues circling back to high school students nowadays, I want to show my students the impact that poetry can have on them and how they can voice their opinions. Some of these topics are difficult to discuss in an appropriate manner, gun control, feminism etc., but with poetry students can have a safe outlet and then feel as though they are being heard.
